This charming town, spread over two banks separated by the Saône and connected by the stone bridge, offers lovely walks along the quays and allows you to learn more about the port activities developed over the centuries. Curious about history? Tour guides will accompany you and reveal the secrets and treasures of Gray! You will also notice the unusual and colorful buildings, such as the Town Hall, a symbol of the Renaissance, with its colorful and glazed tiles that will catch your eye. Also, make a stop at the St. Pierre Tower, whose secret will be revealed to you! The heritage of Gray also includes the Italian theater: its beautiful decor and backstage can be visited.
Boat ride
Do you want to admire the city from a different perspective? Venture onto the waters and enjoy a guided boat ride aboard the Val de Saône’s vessels: ‘l’Audacieux’. These electric boats, operating especially during the high season, will offer you 1.5-hour tours around the history of Gray, including passing through a lock (in group or individually). You can also opt for a cruise with a meal to savor local specialties!
Basilica of Notre-Dame de Gray
Overlooking the heights of Gray, this impressive historical and architectural work was originally built in the 12th century and dedicated to Our Lady. Destroyed during military campaigns and wars under Louis XI, the inhabitants of Gray committed to the reconstruction of their place of worship around 1478. The monument was listed as a Historic Monument in 1988. Inside, you can admire its imposing organ, also classified as a Historic Monument.
Museum Baron Martin
For a cultural outing, you can visit the Musée Baron Martin, which houses a superb collection of art within an 18th-century country house. Overlooking the Saône River, this museum is open for visits year-round! For a fun experience, try the Escape Game offered by the museum.
Kayak
Explore at your own pace and admire the heritage of Gray from the Saône! Rent your own canoe or kayak from the Gray water sports center. A fun activity to enjoy with a group or family!
Bike ride on the Voie Bleue cycling path
The Voie Bleue, a long cycling route along the Saône River connecting Luxembourg to Lyon, will allow you to explore the lush landscapes along the 700 kilometers of trails available to you. Locally speaking: from Gray, you can discover the picturesque Château de Ray-sur-Saône and the Château de Talmay to the south, heading towards the Côte d’Or. Along the way, you’ll encounter beautiful agricultural and rolling landscapes, blending with the stones of the Saône riverbanks. Don’t have a bike? No problem! You can rent one directly from the campsite.
Hiking between the Saône and forests
For nature and walking enthusiasts: step away from the urban trails and explore the marked paths of the Hauts Bois Forest, starting directly from the city of Gray. There is an option for a loop that extends to Esmoulins, with the return trip via the old railway line to Velet.
Horseback rides
The Graylois Equestrian Center offers delightful horseback rides through the heart of Haute-Saône’s landscapes, between greenery and rivers. Breathe in the fresh air. Rides are available for all skill levels.
Ile Sauzay Park
For a nature break, head to the Parc de l’Ile de Sauzay, just a few steps from the city center. This pleasant spot by the Saône River is family-friendly, featuring a playground and some fitness equipment. The park was created after the war. Previously a pasture rented to local farmers by the city, the river branch that once gave the island its insular character has since been removed.
